“Each of us has a unique part to play in the healing of the world.”
— Marianne Williamson
Stonewall Behavioral Health was founded by Nathan T. Smith, LCSW and Paul M. Emmons on the belief that healing must honor both the individual and the system that shaped them. Our work centers those most impacted by systemic harm—especially LGBTQIA+, Two-Spirit, nonbinary, neurodivergent, and rural communities.
We grew from a deep ache for justice and a fierce love for community. From rural beginnings to statewide advocacy, we’ve built systems that resist erasure, protect dignity, and honor legacy. Every session, every story, and every act of care is shaped by the world we live in—and by the people we serve.
To protect, uplift, and transform lives through psychotherapy, peer support, and clinician mentorship.
A world where everyone has access to quality mental health care, regardless of background or circumstance.

We create spaces where healing affirms identity, confronts systemic harm, and restores dignity. Whether we’re supporting a trans client navigating medical gatekeeping, mentoring a clinician building inclusive practice, or helping a family reclaim connection after trauma—we hold each moment with clarity, warmth, and purpose.
Our philosophy is shaped by five core truths:
We don’t just offer therapy—we offer a place to be seen, heard, and held. A place where healing becomes a form of resistance, and care becomes a path to change.
Stonewall Behavioral Health upholds the highest ethical standards in all our practices. Our governance model is designed to protect founders, ensure fair compensation, and foster shared leadership. We prioritize:
We believe that ethical care begins with ethical structure. Our systems are designed to protect both clients and clinicians—and to ensure that healing work is sustainable, inclusive, and accountable.
